Arrow to the Sun

Arrow to the Sun is another piece like The Stonecutter that’s inspired by the collage illustrations in children’s books by Gerald McDermott. I read these books in the 70s and I’m getting back in touch with them as I read them to my daughter now. Arrow to the Sun, the book, is a Native American folk tale about a boy who has no father and discovers upon traveling to the sun that his father is actually the Sun Lord. He returns to earth and spreads the spirit of the Sun among men. The bold black stripe shows his journey to the sun after being transformed into an arrow. The field of red and orange represents his bringing the spirit of the sun back to earth. This piece also has a unique almost hexagonal kind of that’s in also inspired by the illustrations in this book.
