This vase is very unique. The dark greens are highlighted with white “scribbles” and stripes, which then lead the eye to the black and yellow center. It is a wonderful art glass piece.
The Philip vase was created by fusing dozens of handmade glass tiles into a cylinder and then blowing the fused glass into it’s shape. The texture on the inside of the piece is the result of the fusing process which allows passing light to bend and distort the pattern, highlighting the interior space that exists in the perception of the viewer.
My inspiration for this vase was the interaction of nature with man made elements I was struck with after a visit to Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan, CT. Parts of the patterning are dominated by organic textures while other elements are ordered and grid like, in both contrast and harmony.
