STRIGI MOSAIC CARVED reflects a stage of evolution in my newest work. combining various elements of mosaic that give me the bold motion of the sweeping lines side by side with the more painterly result of more detailed mosaic elements. The elements of the patterns are geometric and grid-like when I begin the process, but the result is anything but. The patterning is fashioned from mosaic elements laid out to accentuate the interaction of colors as you look into and through. The many tiles that make up the mosaic elements are drawn into long pieces, fused and re drawn multiple times to achieve this level of detail. The mosaic itself is then fused in the heat of the glassblowing furnace, sculpted and blown into shape. Before I begin shaping the piece there is a phase of extensive manipulation of the mosaic during the glassblowing process. Complex patterning and overlay of pattern and texture along with semi metallic elements interact in different ways depending on the light, and you will be delighted to see how the interactions shift and change through the changing light of the day.

×Mosaic: Building the mosaic is the starting point of the glassblowing process and the culmination of a tremendous amount of work and planning. Making the mosaic is the most creative part of the process, where Jeffrey decides on the colors and their placement in the finished piece, resulting in the specific color interactions. Jeffrey creates each element of the mosaic first, using various techniques to make the bands, squares, and patterns that make up the final design.
×Carving/Cold Sculpting: Carving and cold-sculpting takes place after the piece is completely cooled from the glassblowing process. Jeffrey looks for ways to accentuate and distort the color interactions. He uses all manner of grinding and polishing tools to achieve the different patterns and textures.
×Glassblowing Process: The traditional glassblowing process is the interpretive phase of creating Jeffrey’s work. The mosaic is sculpted while hot onto the end of the blowpipe, and from there he proceeds with traditional glassblowing methods to form the piece into an egg, bowl, vase or other kind of sculpture.
